Chelsea injuries pile up

Didier Drogba will miss the start of Chelsea’s season after he underwent groin surgery that will prevent him from training for at least another three weeks.

Drogba ruled out for the start of the season

Drogba joins Petr Cech and Alex on the sidelines, with the trio ruled out of the Community Shield against Manchester United on August 8. Drogba is due to return to training around the same time as the opening weekend of the Premiership. Chelsea start their campaign with a home tie against newly-promoted West Brom, followed by games against Wigan, Stoke and West Ham.

A statement issued on the club’s official website read: “Didier Drogba successfully underwent minimally invasive surgery yesterday [Friday] on the groin injury that had troubled him for some of last season. The decision to perform the procedure after his return from the World Cup was made to optimise his rehabilitation, and he is expected to return to full training in approximately three weeks.”
