Vidic agrees long-term Man Utd deal

Vidic set for new long-term deal at Man Utd

Nemanja Vidic had become as bad as Didier Drogba at Chelsea for angling at a move abroad in recent times. Turns out he was just up to the same thing, wanting a new contract. So we didn’t really have to listen to the ‘word coming from Manchester is that Vidic’s wife is unhappy and the player wants to leave’ nonsense for the past 18 months did we?

Manchester United announced tonight that Vidic has agreed a new deal to stay at the club, though no contract has been signed and the length of the deal is as yet unknown. Chief Executive David Gill said: “There was a lot of speculation about Nemanja’s future but in my view it’s been the media drumming some old stories. They certainly didn’t come out of the Manchester United camp and I’m confident they didn’t come out of Nemanja’s camp. It’s great news for Manchester United and great news for Nemanja and the fans.”

To be fair it is great news for the fans, especially after Alex Ferguson remained strangely non-commital when quizzed about the Serb’s future up until as recently as yesterday. Though Vidic didn’t have the best of seasons last year, he remains a crucial part of a solid United back four. Several commentators had speculated that Vidic would be sold to make way for Johnny Evans to partner Rio Ferdinand at the back, but this seems to be English media bias in our opinion. The fact that Rio Ferdinand would be considered untouchable, with Vidic expendable, is nonsense given the English man’s severe injury problems compared to Vidic. A far more sensible opinion is that Vidic will end up partnering Evans again this season, more often that not.

The only man who may not be entirely happy about the news is Johnny Evans. The Northern Ireland international would be a regular centre back in any other team in the Premiership at this stage and that includes the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea. Quite how Ferguson can accommodate him if Vidic and Ferdinand stay fit remains to be seen.
