City spending spree continues

The ever colourful Mario Balotelli

There are reports this morning that Manchester City have continued their phenomenal spending spree with the £23 million capture of Inter Milan’s tempestuous young striker Mario Balotelli.

The 19-year-old could be reunited with former boss Roberto Mancini at Eastlands as the Daily Mail claims a deal has been struck between the two clubs. Balotelli was rarely out of the headlines for the wrong reasons last season after he fell out repeatedly with Inter’s fans and coach Jose Mourinho. Incoming boss Rafael Benitez has always insisted on his players having the “right character” as well as requisite skill, and was always likely to show the youngster the door for the right price.

Mancini, who had a good relationship with Balotelli in his time at Inter, is set to strengthen his squad yet again, however despite the Italian’s obvious ability, question marks will remain over Balotelli’s signing. A target for racist abuse from rival supporters in Italy, Balotelli upset Inter fans for throwing his shirt to the floor after the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona, and for wearing an AC Milan shirt on Italian TV. Inter fans also criticised a perceived lack of effort after the forward complained about being played out of position by Mourinho.

However the explosive temperamental footballers have often proven their worth when gambled on by faithful managers in the past, though not many have had a £23 million gamble hanging around their necks. From Eric Cantona to Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester has seen its fair share of prima donnas. Whatever happens, it won’t be dull.

IT should be added that Man City are in the papers every day and have either signed, been linked with or had a ‘come and ge me’ plea from someone nearly every day for the past six months! Still this one isn’t being denied by Benitez or Mancini so watch this space….
