Gerrard commits to Liverpool

In another interesting day at Anfield, captain Steven Gerrard returned to training and pledged his future to the club (perhaps for the last time?) while Liverpool agreed a £2 million fee (possibly rising to £5mill) for Rangers defender Danny Wilson. The centre back was named Scotland’s young player of the year last year and had been linked to the club before Rafa Benitez departed, meaning he has likely been signed on the back of scouting reports.

Gerrard: I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family. I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and having done so I’m very impressed with his plans for the future of the team.I’ve only returned to training today at Melwood with some of the other World Cup players, but I can’t wait for the new season to start.”

Chelsea were forced to deny rumours of an impending bid from Man City for Didier Drogba. The 32-year-old’s agent spoke yesterday of the possibility of moving him out of Chelsea in a radio interview, however a Chelsea spokesman said the speculation was “irrelevant” as he was not for sale.

Meanwhile goalkeeper Peter Cech could be a doubt for Chelsea’s preseason fixtures after suffering a calf strain in training.

Stoke winger Matthew Etherington was rewarded for an outstanding season with a new four-year-deal. The left winger had been linked with an England call-up after a series of excellent performances for Stoke, and said “I am confident that we can go on to bigger and better things and I want to play my part by improving upon what I achieved last season.”

Man Utd manager Alex Ferguson hinted he was unlikely to add further signings to his squad before the transfer window closes in August. Having brought in Chris Smalling from Fulham and Javier Hernandez from Chivas Guadalajara for a combined £17 million in pre-season, Ferguson indicated he was happy with the squad: I cannot speak about other clubs. We are comfortable with the squad we have got. We bought players at the right time of the season and we are happy with what we have.

Meanwhile an unhappy time at Arsenal is about to come to an end for Eduardo as he looks set to seal a £6 million move

to Shakhtar Donetsk. The 27-year-old managed just two goals in 24 Premier League appearances last term after recovering from his horrific leg break in 2008. Despite this several clubs were thought to be interested with the player believed to be undegoing a medical with Shakhtar in the coming day.
