Full Champions League and Uefa Cup Draws!

The draws for Europe’s premier competitions have been made and there are some mouth-watering ties in prospect.

In the Champions League, European champions AC Milan will face Premiership leaders Arsenal in the pick of the ties. Arsenal and AC Milan play some of the best football around and the idea of the two clashing is a most appealing one. Arsene Wenger V Carlo Ancelotti. Inzaghi V Gallas. Kaka V Fabregas. Nesta V Van Persie. mmmmmm…….

Liverpool face Serie A leaders Inter Milan. Liverpool will be reasonably pleased with this one as Inter are more than capable of shooting themselves in the foot despite their obvious talents. The Merseysiders will come up against a familiar foe in Hernan Crespo who will be desperate to put one over the team who denied him Champions League glory with AC in 2005 despite his two goals in the final. Manchester United and Chelsea have more favourable draws. Chelsea in particular will be confident of progressing against Olympiakos while Manchester United face Lyon who needed a last-day win over Rangers to qualify. Lyon are a good side and have some good players but tend to come unstuck at this stage of the competition.

Celtic face Barcelona and the atmosphere in Celtic Park for that one will be absolutely huge. The Catalans toured Scotland last summer and will be grateful for that as it will give them an indication of the conditions they will face on a freezing night in Glasgow next year (yes, i’m implying that it’s as cold in Summer as it is in Winter in Scotland).

Elsewhere Real Madrid V Roma could be a classic. Neither side have a defence to speak of but both have some quality forward players. Totti, so often linked with a move to Madrid, will have the chance to impress against a shaky Madrd defence while Van Nistelrooy should be given free reign of the goals in the tie from Roma’s back four.

Fenerbache V Sevilla and Shalke V Porto don’t exactly make us like back and smile but Sevilla will be thrilled. First time out in the Champions League and a quarter-final place is beckoning. Then again, Fenerbache could be the surprise package of the season, who knows? Porto and Shalke is a reasonably even contest. Porto are used to getting through to quarter-final stages. Shalke are in dizzying new heights but both have good enough players to challenge a top team in the next stage.

The UEFA Cup has also thrown up some intriguing ties. Fair play Aberdeen who having hammered Copenhagen last night now face the favourites Bayern Munich. We’re tipping Bayern to make it through. But Aberdeen will be thrilled to have a major European team visiting their part of the world (Scotland, I think??).

Bolton have a tricky tie. Atletico are amongst the favourites also and it remains to be seen whether Gary Megson will take it more seriously now that they’re in the last-32. Probably depends on Bolton’s league position come February.

Spurs and Everton will be confident of progressing though Spurs will struggle to emulate London neighbours Arsenal’s 7-0 hammering of the same opposition in the Champions League. Everton must be looking at this tournament as a possible piece of long-overdue silverware. Brann are unlikely to cause a full strength Everton team too many problems. Elsewhere Galatasaray V Leverkusen and Marseille V Spartak Moscow look like the highest profile games. The real business begins in the next round though.
