I can’t Stan it no more…

Stan is a goner…

Steve Staunton has reportedly been sacked by the FAI as boss of the senior Ireland team.

An emergency meeting in Dublin tonight of the board of the FAI has resulted in the removal of Staunton as Ireland boss. The writing was on the wall after a dour draw with Cyprus at Croke Park last Wednesday and FAI head, John Delaney refused to back his under fire manager.

After giving the Irish media the slip by booking a conference in two hotels, the FAI finally decided on the Radisson in Dublin airport as the scene of their dethroning. Staunton is set to be succeded by either David O’ Leary, of previous Leeds infamy, or Paul Jewell, formally of Wigan.

This is the anticipated step taken by the FAI following a disappointing Euro 2008 qualifiying campaign and a Cyprus home game which finished to a chorus of boos from the home support.

Whoever comes next in the long line of Ireland managers with the weight of expectation on their shoulders will be under public scrutiny and will surely have their work cut out for them.

Let’s all pray a collective prayer that its not Dave O’ Leary!!

Guus Hiddink for me personally…
