Liverpool sign Babel!

Dutch forward Ryan Babel has completed his move to Liverpool from Ajax for a reported fee of around £11.5 million according to the Dutch club. While Liverpool have yet to officially confirm the move, they may be waiting to confirm both Babel and Yossi Benayoun’s transfers in one press release.

Babel arrived on Merseyside yesterday and the deal seems to have gone through extremely smoothly. Babel, a star of the Netherlands recent under-21 European Championship winning team, was linked with Arsenal earlier this season as recommended by Robin Van Persie, however Arsenal’s interest cooled and Babel himself appeared set to stay at Ajax for another season while confirming he would ‘at some stage’ play in the red and white of Arsenal.

It seems he will now be playing at Anfield after signing a five year deal, another long term signature which seems to bode well for Liverpool’s future. The question on everyone’s lips now is: what is Liverpool’s midfield going to consist of next year? Benayoun, Babel, Leva and Mascherano are all competing in an already crammed midfield which comprises Pennant, Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko, Kewell, Riise/Aurelio, and ‘defensive strikers’ such as Kuyt and Crouch who provide superb link-up but may not find the room in a congested midfield.

Benitez may still intend on bringing in a left winger, however with ‘one more’ signing on the way according to Mr. Hicks, the smart money suggests it’ll be a left-back as Benitez prefers both Riise and Aurelio in attacking left-sided positions. Gabriel Heinze has already claimed today he is thrilled to be linked with the likes of Liverpool.

For the fans, two weeks ago they were up in arms about the lack of transfer activity: what a difference a fortnight makes!
