Copa America: Day 4

Result. Thefc100, finally, correctly predicted the outcome of the last round of games which took place on thursday night. We got the scores wrong but the result is the main thing, right? Argentina well and truly cemented their place as favourites with a convincing 4-1 win over the states while Colombia disintegrated when faced with Roque Santa Cruz against Paraguay. Tonight sees Group A reopened as Bolivia take on Uruguay and Peru face hosts, Venezuela.

Gonzalo Vargas…. Won’t be playing tonight.

Bolivia V Uruguay (KO. 9.05pm)

Bolivia find themselves in a relatively good position in the group having drawn their last game against Venezuela. Tonight’s game will be a big indicator of who will eventually qualify from Group A. Veteran striker, Jaime Moreno hauled himself onto the score sheet in the 2-2 draw with Venezuela along with Arce. This will be the likely pairing again tonight. Coach, Erwin Sanchez knows he has a developing team but hopes they can put in a good performance against a side which has not lived up to its pre-tournament billing. “Step by step we are growing, we are going to maintain the same attitude and a new identity” said Bolivia’s supremo. He also promised attacking football and said “It does not interest us to sit back, it is good for us to maintain the impetus and be offensive”. Great news for football then as we are sure to see even more goals (only three teams in the tournament have failed to score so far, Brazil, Tonight’s opponents Uruguay and Colombia)! This attitude is why, if they get a result tonight, they could easily qualify for the next round.

The next round is a distant land for Uruguay at the moment as they sit plump at the bottom of the group. Wholesale changes from the team that were beaten 3 nil by Peru midweek could have been expected from coach Oscar Washington. Instead the team retains a familiar look. Three changes are all that Washington felt was necessary for an upturn in Uruguayan fortunes. Valencia’s Estoyanoff makes way for Cristian Rodriguez, Andres Scotti comes in for Diego Godin and Nestor Cannobio is replaced by Maximiliano Pereira. Avaro Recoba still hasn’t done enough to figure in the coaches starting eleven but it has been hinted that he will make an appearance tonight. Uruguay still have a good chance of qualifying from the group so they will need to kick on tonight and up the ante.

Prediction: Bolivia 1 – 1 Uruguay
