Copa America: Day 2 round-up

Chile’s Suazo scored twice against Ecuador

Ecuador 2 – 3 Chile

We hope this isn’t becoming a trend. Again thefc100 predicted one right and one wrong result from last nights games. Chile came from behind twice to win three two against Ecuador who were put ahead in the 16th minute by Wigan midfielder Valencia. Thus ensued a frantic seven minutes where Chile equalised through Suazo and Ecuador restored their lead with Delgado replacement, Cristian Benitez, opening his account. Suazo equalised again in the 80th minute and a free kick, three minutes from time, from Chile’s Villanueva finished the contest and left Ecuador stunned. Coach Luis suarez was almost lost for words… except for saying “It was one of those games where the opponents don’t beat you but you lose the game yourself”. Chile coach Nelson Acosta admitted that Ecuador threw it all away by saying “we are a good side that sometimes plays well”.

Rafael Marquez and match winner Ramon Morales

Brazil 0 – 2 Mexico

Chile now join Mexico at the top of the group after a surprising result in Puerto ordaz. The Mexicans, who must be knackered by now, put Brazil to the sword in a two nil defeat which sent a message to every team in the competition. Brazil began brightly and midfielder Diego had a goal disallowed before Mexico took the lead through Nery Castillo. Robinho narrowly missed the crossbar with a spectacular bicycle kick which recieved generous applause from the entire ground. Mexcio quickly doubled their lead with a free kick from Ramon Morales. Early changes from Brazil coach Dunga in the second half were not enough to turn the tide. Daniel Alves and Anderson came on for the second half but failed to change the game. Alfonso Alves made an appearence towards the end but it was too late. Dunga put the result down to bad luck saying “we lost our concentration and conceded the goals. We then recovered and showed our quality but the ball would not go in”.
