Atletico Madrid fans staged a protest in Madrid city centre tonight after rumours circulated that Liverpool had agreed a fee for the Atletico captain Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker, Atletico’s favourite son, is thought to be mulling over a move to Anfield after Rafa Benitez despatched his own agent Garcia Quilon to try and broker the deal.

The only remaining sticking point is thought to be a loyalty bonus of 10% of the transfer fee, approximately 2.5 million pounds, owing to Torres as he has not requested a move away. Liverpool believe the fee should come out of the transfer fee while Atletico want Liverpool to pay Torres on top of the transfer fee. Either way, the move will cost Liverpool a lot of money, easily eclipsing their previous record transfer of Djibril Cisse three years ago.

Whether the move will be completed remains to be seen though Liverpool will be hopeful of securing their man, in the clearest indication yet that Rafa Benitez will, in fact, receive the financial assistance he craves from the new American owners of the club. Torres, meanwhile, seems to have been told that the choice is his, while Liverpool have matched the release clause in his contract and Atletico stand to make a lot of money if he is sold, should he decide to stay it seems no-one associated with the club will be too disappointed.

Meanwhile Liverpool have announced the signing of Nikolay Mihaylov from Levski Sofia on an initial three year deal, with an option for two further years. The highly rated keeper made his senior international debut against Scotland last May and told Bulgarian sports website http://www.sportal.bg ‘it is the greatest moment of my life’.

I think having a target man like Crouch, Kuyt or Voronin alongside Torres may give him the freedom to play off the other striker, someone else winning the ball and allowing Torres to do something with it once he has a bit of space. While Man Utd don’t really play with a ‘target man’, the service their wide players provide may be of greater service to Torres. However Liverpool’s array of central midfielders will be on hand to play a quick passing, link-up game with Torres, should he arrive…..!
