News of the World

Arsene Wenger is lining up a bid for former Gunner Nicolas Anelka, currently at Bolton, for a fee of around £11million. Hello to you. Best news we’ve heard all week. Then again we did suggest this transfer a few days ago so the papers are lagging behind at this stage. The reason this is great news is (a) Anelka is actually a great player and it would be great to see him replicating the form of years ago. (b) Thefc100 tends to worry when the biggest players leave the Premiership that others will follow suit. Anelka signing for Arsenal will be a clear statement of intent that life goes on and that Arsenal can get back to being a team again without being Henry + 10. This seems like a sensible move. Whether Wenger wants Anelka’s brothers sniffing around the Emirates is debatable however with Wenger expected to move on next year, maybe he’s prepared to grin and bear it. The relationship between the two is probably in need of mending slightly, however Anelka is a player Wenger can trust having worked with him before and he will also flourish back at Arsenal. The stumbling block will be Bolton; their squad is pretty threadbare at the moment anyway, lose Anelka and they might become a dark horse for a relegation battle in theFc100’s eyes. (Note: pretty much all of the papers are running this story today).

West Ham have made a bid of £11million for Shaun Wright-Phillips. Strange that Chelsea made potential suitors aware that they are willing to let SWP go for the right price and yet there’s been very little action on that front. SWP’s stock has seemingly disintegrated from being one of the hottest properties in English football, linked with Liverpool and Arsenal before joining Chelsea. Now, even with Liverpool and Arsenal both seeking right wingers, the buck falls to West Ham, everyone’s favourite spenders, to register their interest. There’s no doubt Mourinho will let SWP leave, more regular playing time last season was more an indication of injuries to Robben and Cole coupled with the pursuit of four trophies, than a show of faith in the winger by Mourinho. West Ham’s bid affords the benefits to Chelsea of not being direct competition for trophies, while SWP will get to stay in London. Deal.

Sunderland are lining up a bid for Liverpool’s Scott Carson. Nope, Benitez has assured Carson that he expects him to fight for the number one jersey with Reina this season. While Carson may want first team football, this is his best chance yet of proving himself at Anfield and Benitez won’t want to sign another keeper to replace a top quality number two like Carson.

Martin O’Neill looks set to end his interest in Nigel Reo-Coker. Could it be that Reo-Coker has had a change of heart? West Ham are being linked with a number of new faces, have already signed a top midfielder in Scot Parker. Exciting times to be playing at West Ham we would have thought. However, it may be that Villa are not prepared to meet the asking price which seemed to go up in the last few weeks after the clubs had been close to an agreement. We wouldn’t be surprised if the combative midfielder decided to stay, perhaps relinquished the captain’s armband, and see can he help get the Hammers into Europe, a distinct possibility this season.

Sunday Mirror

Portsmouth are lining up a move for Alan Smith for around £3.5 million to £7milllion, depending on where you read the story. Redknapp has admitted that signing Smith for a fee somewhere in the above region would be good value given that he has recently forced his way into the England setup and is a no-nonsense, hardworking player and professional. Redknapp has admitted he would be ‘surprised’ if he could land Freddi Kanoute from Sevilla. This is possibly because Kanoute has stated he will be staying in Spain. Maybe a bit of an indication.

Our favourite Spurs rumour of the day is the one linking them with a free transfer swoop for Christian Vieri. Speculation in Italy is rife that the 34 year old’s agent has met with Spurs officials already and are planning further talks next week. This sounds like a good rumour to us. Spurs sign him for a year with the option of a further year, Bent possibly joins him and suddenly Spurs have three top strikers plus the ‘older, wiser’ (experienced) player to show them the way when they’re drawing 1-1 with fourteen minutes left on the clock. Although it could be genuine, as with all Spurs rumours, take it with a pinch of salt….

The People

Bets rumour of the day though, goes to The People who claim Middlesbrough are on the brink of completing a dramatic swoop for Barcelona’s Javier Saviola. Saviola swapping the Nou Camp for a pint and a pork pie sounds a little off to us. Still, Gareth Southgate is a top manager whose only negative mark is that, well, he doesn’t have the requisite coaching badges. Now, Saviola was linked with a move to Real Madrid just five days ago. In the meantime, Middlesbrough are suddenly being linked with the Argentine forward. He’ll be delighted to hear he’ll be linking up with Tuncay Sanli instead of Raul and Robinho. Plus the weather’s meant to be lovely up by the Riverside right….?
