Signed on the dotted line….(+ transfer rumours 07/06/07)

Pepe Reina has signed a new deal at Liverpool today, following Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard in comitting his future to the club. Rein’a new contract keeps him at the club until 2012. Liverpool fans will be pleased to see this deal being completed because (a) Reina is proving to be a more than capable keeper and is still young at the age of 25 and (b) this shows that the club can hold on to its prized assets. Players are clearly excited by Liverpool’s future and are willing to commit to the club long term meaning Benitez has the trust of his playing staff. Reina said: “I am very happy with this contract. It was always my wish to sign a new deal because this is a good club which is looking forward to a very ambitious and attractive project”

Newcastle have signed Mark Viduka from local rivals Middlesbrough on a two-year deal. Viduka, who turned down a ‘substantial’ offer from Middelsbrough to stay at the club according to chief executive Keith Lamb, hit 19 goals last season and is manager Sam Allardyce’s first signing for the club. Seeing a player leave your rivals and sign for your team is always a good thing, and the Geordies will like this signing. Securing Viduka on a free transfer is a good bit of business and at 31 the Australian still has plenty to offer. A forward line of Ameobi, Owen, Martins and Viduka is looking as strong as it has in a while and Allardyce will now need to strengthen his defence with Joey Barton expected to complete his deal tomorrow.

Real Madrid could be in hot water after Chelsea claimed they will write a formal letter of complaing regarding a possible tapping-up of winger Arjen Robben. Robben, who claimed earlier this month he was willing to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge, is reportedly a top target of Madrid this summer after President Calderon claimed last summer he would be brought to the club. Chelsea would probably be happy to sell Robben at this stage; injury-prone, the victim of a few barbed comments from Jose Mourinho regarding his availability and commitment and struggling to replicate his impact of two seasons ago, the ‘allegations of  the tapping-up’ of Robben may result in a better price for the winger…watch this space.

Good news for Liverpool fans. Franck Ribery has sealed a £17million move from Marseille to Bayern Munich. The winger, coveted by a host of clubs including Real Madrid and Arsenal, has surprisingly signed a four year deal at Bayern, who failed to qualify for the Champons League next term, leaving Marseille who secured their spot in the Champions League with a runner up position in Ligue 1. The news will mean that Marseille have a little money to play with now, and having initially wanted to extend Djibril Cisse’s loan move, they may now choose to put up the cash demanded by Liverpool for the flambouyant forward who had a reasonably successful loan stint this season.

Ben Foster will need surgery after the club revealed he has to have surgery on a cruciate knee ligament injury in the next few weeks. Unlucky Foster had been expected to start the season as Manchester United’s number one after Edwin Van Der Saar made a series of blunders towards the end of the season. Foster, whose form on loan at Watford earned him international recognition, will be desperate to get back to action as soon as possible to avoid letting Van der Saar get too much of a headstart in the race for the goalkeeper’s jersey at Old Trafford next season.

Jussi Jaaskelainen could leave Bolton after talks on a new contract stalled. This story seems set for an unhappy conclusion for Bolton. Either the Finn is holding out for more money that Bolton probably don’t have or he is set to walk away this summer. The only surprise for us is that there isn’t a queue of clubs trying to sign him, having been one of the best keepers in the Premiership for a number of years. Sunderland seem to be the club trying to snap him up for a very reasonable £2million.

Tottenham and Celtic are battling it out to sign Marlon Harewood. What Spurs? Linked with an Englishman at a rival club?? Surely not? We’re gonna ignore the Spurs story here, Celtic could be an interesting option. Harewood had a poor season last year but the year before was a huge part of West Ham’s successful season that saw them reach the FA Cup final. The Scottish league is a physical one, Harewood would have no problems there and may be a decent option for the Scottish champions at a reasonably cheap price.

Derby are set to hijack Ipswich’s bid for Francis Jeffers as they are willing to meet Blackburn’s £1.5 million asking price. Lucky lucky Franny. Another chance at a Premiership club. Derby may suit him although their fans may not be too pleased to hear that their money of which there isn’t a lot, is being spent on a ‘prospect’ of five or six years ago. The former Arsenal flop would relish a shot at the Premiership again after not getting a great chance at Blackburn due to the form of Benni McCarthy. Bit cheeky asking for £1.5 million for a man who signed on a free a year ago and started just three games last season!! Meanwhile Ipswich have had a second bid, believed to be in the region of half a million pounds, turned down by Blackburn.

Daily Mail

Sunderland have launched a £6million bid for David Nugent of Preston. Nugent, who scored on his debut for England earlier this year, seems certain to move to the Premiership and Roy Keane has been permanently linked with the prolific forward. 17 goals last season wasn’t enough to help Preston gain promotion and although Paul Simpson has stated his desire to hang onto Nugent, a £6million bid sounds about right financially and will probably be accepted after a little bit of haggling…..

Florent Malouda has indicated he would be happy to join a ‘great club’ such as Liverpool. With Rafa Benitez bound to be gritting his teeth at the lack of transfer action at the club, this news will come as something of a boost. Rumours that Lyon have opened negotiations with former Liverpool targer Simao of Benfica add fuel to the rumours linking Malouda with Liverpool and this transfer should be set in stone within a week…..
