Liverpool Deals signed

Liverpool have tied down local boys Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher to new four year contracts that expire in 2011. With both players able to buy out of their current contracts this summer under new FIFA guidelines, the club made it imperative for the two to be tied down to deals that effectively pledge the rest of their careers to the club.

Carragher and Gerrard have come to stand for much more than the two most consistent performers in the Liverpool team. With the US takeover last season, the two are being used as PR and this is the second successive time the two have penned their new deals together and had a joint announcement about their contracts.

With Liverpudlians bound to be concerned about the takeover of the club, especially since local businessman Steve Morgan was turned down in the process, Gerrard and Carraghers’ committment to the club has become imperative, a sign that nothing has changed and that the future is rosy at the club.

With the likes of Steve Finnan, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso all rumoured to be close to signing new deals, Rafael Benitez is sending out a statement of intent, that he intends to keep the core nucleus of his team together for the foreseeable future, none more important than Gerrard and Carragher.

Of course the timing of the deal couldn’t be better for the club, who have had to see their famous name tarnished today by Uefa’s report on the trouble in Athens. While Liverpool have launched their own vehement defence of the majority of their fans’ actions, this announcement will do plenty to take the focus off the trouble in Athens, and towards the football side of things, with Liverpool’s rebuilding from the Athens defeat starting right here.

This announcement also masks the fact that Liverpool have failed to be pro-active in the transfer market so far this term, recruiting three youngsters for the youth team or reserves, while rivals Man Utd and Chelsea have already recruited five big names between them……

A great day for Liverpool fans though, two hugely important players have penned their futures to the club, possibly having been reassured about potential signings, with Carragher having already revealed that the two were part of an inner circle whom Benitez talked to about his transfer targets.

Reaction to the new contracts:

Carragher: I am very pleased. Obviously we are both local lads and I’ve always said I wanted to stay here for the rest of my career. Hopefully I’ve got one more [contract] left in me that will take me until the end of my career. I have signed for four years and hopefully I can still be a regular in the team. That’s the aim anyway.

Gerrard: I’m really pleased too. The negotiations have gone really smoothly. Although they have been spoken about for a couple of weeks, I think it’s happened pretty quickly. I’m just pleased to get it out of the way and we look forward to next season now. Hopefully over the next four years we can deliver a lot more trophies.
