Making the news today…

My little sister just brought me a cup of tea so I decided now was as good a time as any to start discussing today’s football stories……ah, always tastes better when someone else makes it…..

Steve Morgan is the new owner of Wolves, replacing 84 year-old Sir Jack Hayward as chairman after Hayward’s seventeen years at the helm of the Molineux outfit. First of all, that deserves a big round of applause. I mean being chairman of a top Premiership side assumably comes with it’s own pressures but being chairman of Wolves for seventeen years must have been a right pain in the ass at times, screw the pressure. Anyway, Morgan who had been trying to wrestle control of Liverpool for a number of years previous to this deal but was outmuscled by a couple of Americans, has bought the shares for a measly £10, having promised to invest £30 million. Personally I find this deal refreshing for a whole host of reasons. Firstly, it’s great to see a chairman relinquish control for pittance, secure in the knowledge that the incoming chairman will invest the cash needed to provide security and a bright future to his beloved club. I know Sir Jack doesn’t need the money but regardless of the fact that it was Wolves, there was presumably a little money to be made and investing more into the club at his age may not have seemed sensible. Better to let a young, energetic man like Steve Morgan try and bring Wolves to the heights of the Premiership.

Now i’ll be honest, i’ve only seen Wolves a handful of times this season, but I was impressed by the style of football they played and it’s nice to see Morgan keen to retain McCarthy’s services. I think this looks like a good move for Wolves, financially and in terms of personnel, Wolves fans feel free to disagree……

McCarthy told Sky Sports:

It’s an exciting prospect and I can’t see any downside to it. We shouldn’t forget what Sir Jack’s done at the football club, sometimes that gets forgotten and it shouldn’t because he’s been a wonderful owner. What a magnanimous, gracious thing to do to hand it over, and he’s not taking anything out of it.
